Neuropsychological assessment is not simply a collection of test scores.
Structured testing takes place under controlled conditions, often with clear instructions, limited distractions and one task presented at a time. Everyday life can be considerably less accommodating.
A claimant who performs well during an assessment may therefore still experience significant difficulties when those demands occur simultaneously, repeatedly or without external structure.
Can the Claimant Sustain Their Performance?
This distinction can become particularly important when considering employment, independence and future support.
Someone may be capable of concentrating effectively for a short period but experience substantial cognitive fatigue afterwards. They may complete a task accurately but require considerably longer than before their injury. They may function well in familiar situations yet struggle when required to adapt or problem-solve.
The question is therefore not simply “Can they do it?”
It may also be: Can they do it reliably, efficiently and repeatedly across a normal day or week?
